OVERVIEW

QM LP, partnering with SRK Consulting (Canada) Ltd., was selected by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations to complete this combined design-build contract, which required the consolidation of historical mine waste into a single on-site, long-term storage facility that would mitigate unacceptable risks to human and ecological receptors. 

Mine tailings from the Salmo River floodplain and up-gradient mill-contaminated soils were to be consolidated at a single location and covered with an engineered cover.

AN INTEGRATED approach

QM Environmental's Remediation team was able to provide the following services: 

  • The design and build tasks included detailed engineered design of a long-term storage facility, development of erosion control along a high velocity river bank, permanent bridge and site re-vegetation.
  • Hydraulic modeling of the river was required to ensure no downstream effects were caused by the engineered works.
  • Mobilization and demobilization of crew, supplies and equipment, as well as site preparation (including mill footing demolition).
  • Permanent 50' engineered bridge construction and installation.
  • Site restoration, including site grading, surveying, hydro-seeding and environmental protection actions.
  • Mill area consolidation, consisting of excavation, transport and placement of 450m3 of mill contaminated soils into the landfill and excavation backfilling of 450m3.
  • Construction of landfill area, consisting of base preparation of 3950m2, a protection layer and impervious liner of 5,000m2 and 1m thick soil cover which included hydro-seeding and re-vegetation.
  • Tailings excavation, transport and consolidation of 6000m3 and placement and excavation backfilling of 6000m3.
  • Erosion barrier construction of 150m to prevent shoreline erosion.
  • Remedial construction report including all as-built drawings and a detailed monitoring and maintenance recommendations report.
