Construction and Installation of a Sediment Debris Trap Structure

QM LP was selected by the District of North Vancouver to complete a sediment basin construction project at Gallant Creek.

Project Scope

The work involved: tree removals, clearing and grubbing, construction of earth berms, construction of a gravel access road, creek channel forming and armouring, and installation of a steel straining structure to act as a debris trap to minimize flooding and debris infiltration into Deep Cove.

QM was also responsible for maintaining erosion and sediment control measures and water quality based on permit and environmental monitor requirements.

QM Services

QM Environmental’s team performed the following services, among others:

    • Cutting and removal of 21 large trees using an arborist.
    • Stripping and disposal of vegetation.
    • Excavation and disposal of soil and re-alignment of the existing creek bed.
    • Import of shot rock/gravel, 300 mm rip rap and 650 mm rip rap for site construction.
    • Temporary construction of a gravel crane pad for steel grate installation.
    • Installation of a shot rock/gravel access road and berm.
    • Temporary water diversion for creek channel construction.
    • Installation of two concrete buttresses for steel grate installation.
    • Armouring the creek channel with 300 mm and 650 mm rip rap.
    • Installation of a large galvanized steel grate structure to act as a debris trap.
    • Topsoil placement and coco matting installation for erosion and sediment control purposes.
    • Pre-construction survey, site feature layout, post construction survey and production of as-built drawings.

Results

    • This project was completed ahead of schedule, safely and to the complete satisfaction of the client.
