Overview

$70 Million Redevelopment Project

This $70 million redevelopment project provides 75,000 square feet of additional retail space at the existing Halifax Shopping Centre.

It involved converting a three-storey office building into a two-storey retail mall with new skylights and atrium spaces. A new entrance on the west side of the property opens into an upgraded and relocated food court with floor-to-ceiling windows, a fireplace, elevated seating and a patio.

Project Scope

The Halifax Shopping Centre, located in Halifax, NS, is Atlantic Canada’s largest shopping centre.

The redevelopment included approximately 75,000 square feet of new retail space, a relocated food court and design upgrades throughout the centre.

Under the contract, QM Environmental provided the following services and solutions, among others:

    • Developed thorough safe and efficient procedures to conduct demolition work within an occupied building.
    • Demolition work was carried out prior to the mall opening on a daily basis, to ensure minimal disruption and impact to the public.
    • QM conducted interior stripping of existing stores, removal of escalators and created new openings on structural slabs/roofs for future skylights and escalators.
    • The exterior façade was also removed from the office towers using overhead cranes to lift the pre-cast panels.
